The Next Generation Young People’s Theatre Company Affiliated to and supported by The Haslemere Thespians Reg Charity No. 292 020 THREE CHEERS FOR MRS BUTLER It was “Back
to School” for all, young or old. In fact it was back to school for everyone
who had ever been to school. Will Keith’s portrayal of the headmaster sent
chills down the spine, (although no headmaster of the reviewer could sing as
well, or speak so clearly). Ed
Taylor-Gooby and Adam Forde’s production produced resonances of the past. All
those teachers – the way they walked, the way they stood, the clothes they
wore. Even someone who left school a very long time ago felt those awful
twinges of guilt for late homework, pulled hair and late attendance of
lessons. The
production at the Haslemere Hall with wonderful atmospheric lighting from
Matt Carrig and clear deliver of every line by the cast was greatly enjoyed. Sometimes
the music played by Tony McIntee sounded as though he had an entire orchestra
under his control, yet provided excellent balance between singer and piano. The cast
did full justice to Emily Davenport’s clever choreography. Of course, you need a great script and the combination
of the poems and characters created by Allan Ahlberg, the adaptation by Vicky
Ireland, and songs by Colin Matthews and Steve Markwick provided the launch
pad for a memorable show. Emily Swatton in the title
role of Mrs Butler was enchanting. No wonder one of her pupils, Nigel, had
such a crush on her. The Next Generation cast of
some 40 youngsters must be congratulated on a great show. It has been
fascinating seeing their progression over the last ten years under Adam
Forde. Haslemere is lucky to have a professional director looking after such
a talented band of youngsters – they are truly the “Next Generation”. This reviewer is looking
forward to their next production. Cast The Staff
